Having FMP trouble.

The problem with that is that the sheathe object will be there even when the sword is in the Hero's hands.

The only way I can think of is to make two versions of a weapon mesh. One has the effect helper that spawns the effect, and one doesn't. The one with an effect helper would be the sword mesh, and you would make the one without be the sheath object.

Boom. This restores all of the original CWeaponDefs, reverting their damage/flourish effects/etc. as well as how they're sheathed, so if you have made other changes to it then be aware of that.
