Either way you will have to export the model, edit it and then reimport it.
The physical movement of the grip is logical enough and for the place the hero will actually put his hand in game you will need to move a helper.
There is nothing in the Void.

Are you going to use the heavy weapons animation or the regular sword?
Because if you're just going to use the regular sword animations It kinda makes sense to hold it further up the handle.
