I believe that this catastrophic technical failure is caused by a .net conflict. In my experience I also was unable to use the zipped (recent version of) AE, and had to go with the installer.

I found that wiping my drive and starting fresh, getting only what was needed, and using something that Bay sent me (I forget what now) I could use every application the site had, and then some.

To see if this is your case, grab dependency walker and see if it says that FE/AE/pretty much any application is missing a Vista library file.

These three are like the splash error in FE, they are not a problem at all.
mpr.dll --> There should be a warning about an unresolved import and such, no problem.
efsadu.dll --> You'll see it as missing but it really doesn't matter.
msjava.dll --> You'll see it as missing but it really doesn't matter.

dwmapi.dll --> This is the one you don't want to see as missing.
If DW says you need dwmapi.dll then this is indeed the problem.

The problem has been associated with Internet Explorer 7, but others have had IE7 without such problems, and such phrases like "crazy psychopathic female dog" have been tossed around on the Microsoft forums about it. I don't have IE7 anymore, but I'm not sure whether or not this was the problem. Uninstalling it didn't work, so yea.

I'm confident in saying it's a .net conflict.
