Is it possible to make any model your weapon?

Because I made a sword and replaced it's graphics with a carrot but all he does is swing it and nothing gets hurt by it.

So basically I'm asking how do you make your character hold a model properly and to how to make it collide with objects?

Who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters?

And yes, pretty much anything can be made into a weapon.
When I first saw this post, rather than providing a link to the tutorials or answering the questions or anything useful, I came up with this and this.

I can't stop playing with 3DS... is there something wrong with me?
