Well, the 3d meshes that are exported in FE come out in .x files, does anyone know a free 3d editor that will edit .x files

With plugins, and even then sometimes it's iffy. I've got two machines with the same 3DS setup and one exports correctly and the other doesn't, same plugins and everything.
I really would suggest you try the free software first, because 3DS is really expensive, especially for a young non-enthusiast.
If you do go for 3DS, try to get a student license, and see if you can't get a used copy, cut costs as much as you can and don't be hesitant to get an older version, from the trials I've tried, older is better.
