It had two textures because there were two different submeshes and marco didn't feel like making one texture with a piece of alpha and the rest not, it's a whole lot easier. Alpha only affects part of the image. You can use gimp's colorify tool to get it into whatever coloring you want, and it ignores the alpha.

There's your problem. Scale the image back down to its original dimensions, then try again.
