I quite enjoy the UI of blender, modeling seems to flow nicely, but I can't say how good it is in comparison to 3ds or Maya, since I have not seriously used either. I like the program, and it seems much nicer than any of the other cheap or free ones out there (Milkshape is good for converting, and maybe small edits, but it is not nearly as powerful or nice looking and feeling as Blender, and so forth)
