[General] Modding on Vista - The Basics [message #55365] |

This thread is subject to be rewritten in a better matter. Patience is a virtue.
Starting out modding on Vista or Windows 7?
Well, there is a few things you're going to need to know first.
Part 1: Operating System Nagging, and FreeRoam Application Lagging
Part 1: Getting your environment Mod-Ready! (Including FreeRoam, but that is optional)
Now unfortunately, modding is a bit different on Vista and Windows 7. Certain things need to be different.
Step one is seeing this lovely and polite thread by the master himself JohnDoe right here.. This explains permissions and provides a way around getting the mod programs of FableTLCMod.
Even the simplest of things are different on Vista, unfortunately.
I made a guide on how to use FreeRoam on Vista before.
DarkenedSoul's FreeRoam Guide | 1. Start with downloading the FreeRoam application. Here. (WinRar Needed to extract it!)
2. Extract the application and run it.
3. In the application, press File / Open
4. Find your FinalAlbion.wad file (Default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fable The Lost Chapters\data\Levels)
5. Choose TNG and Lev(Patched) (The top two clickable boxes). When done, click RIP!
6. It will then ask you to place the final albion wad dumper. YOU MUST PLACE IT IN THE DATA FOLDER, ABOVE THE LEVELS FOLDER! NOT THE LEVELS FOLDER!. Then wait a few minutes for it to finish.
7. Now here is where it is different. Go to here and read it!
8. Take ownership of all of your gamefiles! (Best way, go to C:\Progam Files\Microsoft Games and right click the Fable The Lost Chapters file and click Take Ownership). Wait until it is done.
9. Go to your Levels folder again. Now, click a button just below the file directory saying "Compatability Files". You should see the FinalAlbion folder in there. Copy it, press back, and paste it in your levels folder. [Does not apply for Windows 7]
10. When done, go to your userst.ini in your Fable The Lost Chapters folder (Above data), copy and paste it anywhere else, and change UseLevelWAD True; to UseLevelWAD False; Then copy it back.
11. Delete, move, or rename your FinalAlbion.wad. Remember, keep a backup! Unless you decide to be an idiot
12. Run fable.

Part 2: Modding At Your Best, and Spawning a ChestPart 2: Doing the simplest of modding tasks in Vista. Which will only get simpler the more you try it.
[Below does not apply for Windows 7. Spawn it normally without using compatibility files.]
Now, you need to learn about the worst thing ever to grace Vista called Compatability Files. It is a monster, and it is unavoidable. I've been trying to find ways of bypassing it, but nothing seems to do the job.
Anyway, I don't really know what it is, but Compatability Files shows up in your levels folder after you use FreeRoam. After using it, you'll find that the FinalAlbion folder and the CreatureHub files will show up when you click Compatability Files.
Now this is a reason your level based mods won't work if you do it the normal way. In Vista, you have to have the FinalAlbion folder and the CreatureHub files that come from using FreeRoam in both the Compatability Files place and the Levels folder.
This means that modding programs only edit one of the places. It edits the level files in Compatability Files, and yet doesn't edit the files in the Levels folder.
So this means: Every time you edit a level, you have to go to compatability files, copy the .tng, and paste it into the FinalAlbion in the Levels folder.
Now you're asking "Why do you have to copy it over in the first place if it edits the Compatability Files version? Doesn't the game just read that?" and the answer is, I'm not quite sure. When you delete the version in the Levels folder, your game will get a runtime error suggesting the level doesn't work. Same vice versa. It needs to be in both places.
Yes, this is annoying. Yes, it appears to be unnecessary. But yes, this is Vista I'm afraid.
If you're still confused about it, here is a guide to spawning a chest in Vista. See the steps 16 Onwards if you've already edited your level.
Spawning a chest and having a happy face at the end of it
1. Open Chocolate Box, after doing so go to "Editors", and press Region Editor.
2. In the new window, press File, Load Region.
3. Double click which region you would like to spawn the chest in. Lets say "GrannysHouse" which is Rose Cottage.
4. Now, once loaded, if you see nothing in the screen on the right, then press View, Camera, Top.
5. Now, scroll in. In the red box I have painted on the picture below here, This is where we will spawn this chest.
6. Now, press Things / New
7. Search for OBJECT_CHEST_OPENABLE
8. Once found, have it highlighted with the blue box and press Ok.
9. Now click where you want it. For now, click it where I put the red box.
10. Now there should be a chest right there.
11. This part is a bit more complicated. Click the chest, and on the left of the window a load of gibberish should be there. On the bottom, there will be a text saying CTCChest. Click the plus button on the left of it.
12. Below it, press the button saying Add. Then click the plus next to ContainerContents.
13. Now, click the "..." button next to ContainerContents[0]. Search for the OBJECT you want. Lets have a million gold, which is "OBJECT_GOLD_1000000". Same as before, highlight it and press OK.
14. Now, depending if you want another object in your chest. If you do, keep reading. If you don't, go to step 15. Press the Add button again, and ContainerContents[1] should show up. Press the "..." and add the object you want. Keep doing this until you are happy.
15. File: Save. You can close CBox now.
16. Now go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fable The Lost Chapters\data\Levels\FinalAlbion
17. Press Compatability Files. This will be above the white box containing the files.
18. In here, go to the .tng you edited. We edited GrannysHouse, so go to GrannysHouse.tng. Right click, Copy.
19. Press 'Back' and paste it there [In FinalAlbion].
That tutorial was Chocolate Box. If you don't want to use that, use any old spawning guide based around Albion Explorer and then use step 16 onwards.
Those are the only real things different in Vista. If you bear them in mind, they shouldn't hold you back at all. Now you know the fundamentals of Vista, go on and make your own destiny. Ask me any questions in this thread.
Have fun modding.
Part 3: I was successful there, so what now?
Well we don't say "Making our own destiny" for nothing. The only limits you now have are your abilities and intelligence. Patience is also a massive factor in this. But since you asked nicely, here are some great threads for you to check out.
New to modding Fable? - by OldBoy
This wonderful thread by our own moderator OldBoy is one of the best directories for modding I've ever seen. Once you've successfully achieved all the mods on there, you'll know a lot that you need to know already. It covers nearly everything.

By OldBoy again since this forum is in early stages. If you can't find something you want to do, request it there. But first, Search and look at the Wiki. Make sure it hasn't been written before - we hate repeating ourselves.

Alright, I'm just tryibng to use other people's already created mods... But every time I try to load the game it crashes. I've tried uninstalling the game and loading different mods (maybe it's the mod) but it's not that, I'm definately doing something wrong... I'm running on Win 7, but I'm not trying to mod a level or spawn a chest, I just want to spawn my items through killing guards. I'm having a pretty tough time, any suggestions?
