I've got a newbie question. Would it be possible to make your own Bump images, with something like photoshop, or can it only be done with some kind of developer's tool?

I noticed that the bump maps looked like colored "emboss" images, and I was wondering if the image effect "emboss" would have the same effect as the bump images.

To try and clearify what I mean; Here's an example.

This image is an untouched mask; Basic Mask

and the same image, with the "emboss" effect; Embossed Mask

See, it looks similar to the bump images, but colorless. Now, would that work as a bump image?

Adobe Photoshop Normal Map and DDS Authoring Plug-ins


This installer contains two plug-ins. The first creates normal maps from height maps for per pixel rendering. The other is a DXTC texture compression plugin for Adobe Photoshop that allows you to open and save .dds files in RGB format. It reads and writes .dds files compressed or uncompressed.



Their not technically bump maps. Their normal maps. The nvidia plugin for photoshop will add a filter to create the normal map. After you use that plugin, click on channels and invert the Blue Channel (Fable uses an inverted Blue channel for some unknown reason).

After that, simply add the bump(normal) map to the material tab of the model.
