it's optional...but it would still be a great idea to do just incase you ruin your game.

I'd say it's a must when you start editing gamefiles. Obviously you can always take the original ones from the discs, but it takes more time.
And if you really start messing around with the gamefiles, you're bound to get fable crashing someday.

Yes, but it takes more time.

Doing that once isn't that bad, but if you have to do it more often... you'll be glad you can use a backup.
