Is there an easy way to re-calculate normals in 3ds?

Should be a mesh or uv tool - just look through the tool menus. I don't have max just maya so I can't be more specific - should also be in the documentation that comes with max.

Sorry I'm having a mental block. Why do you need to re-calculate the normals. If they've gotten SNAFUd, I'm of no use without seriously thinking - however, I would suspect using a polygon smooth would get some of them cleaned up. But I'm totally sure there's a tool for fixing normals that have gotten messed up.

edit: sorry I think I'm being completely useless... Embarassed I think I'll shut up till I can actually give a decent answer.

Also since I'm totally sure that maya has a tool for redoing normals you could export the file in to maya binary (.mb) or ascii (.ai I think) or .OBJ or .fbx and then I might be able to clean it.
