The hero mesh is only like 4000 tops.

Smoothing normals is who low res looks high res. Normals can basically make a 4K model look like it's 40K. That is how current generation games work. Next gen games (and even a few now) use normal mapping as well which can make you're 4k model look like 400K+.

That armour could likely be done in around 1 to 2 thousand.
